Ward Residence

Barnard, VT

This late 1970’s contemporary house and extensive property was purchased by the clients as a quiet getaway from their hectic Los Angeles lifestyle. The property contained awkward formal elements and incongruous plant material that disconnected the livable space around the house from the larger landscape.

The new design incorporates irregular field stone walks and terraces as replacement of the undersized cut bluestone paving, extends drifts of native maple and birch closer to the house, and converts a large unused lawn area to a wildflower meadow.

Additionally, flowing drifts of perennials along the existing farm wall at the field’s edge, seamlessly reconnect the residence with the surrounding landscape.
